10 Movies That Made My 2009

In 2008, I talked about my favorite movies of the year. It's only apt that I continue in that vein this year and talk about the 10 movies that were my favorites of 2009. The following movies are ranked based on multiple factors like how much I enjoyed the movie and how good I thought the movie was.

Also, it's important to bear in mind that I'm making this list without having seen many movies that would make this list if I had seen them. If that even makes sense. For example, I have yet to see Up, Avatar, A Serious Man, Crazy Heart, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call- New Orleans, Precious, Up In The Air and (500) Days Of Summer. I will eventually watch those movies but until then, shall we get started on the movies I did watch last year? Let's go!

#10. The Hangover

The Hangover has definitely got to be the comedy of the year. It may be a little bit stupid but it’s amazingly funny as hell thanks to a good plot and a great cast. If you have not seen this, you have to see it.

 

#9. Star Trek

What made Star Trek such a good movie was the fact that it not only was a film for the Trekkies but also for the general public. Also, I thought the performances by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto were top notch. Has this movie turned me into a Star Trek fan? No it has not. But it definitely makes me anxious to catch the next J.J. Abrams directed Star Trek. Check out my Star Trek review right here.

 

#8. Knowing

This film might not be on many people’s lists, but it’s on mine because I was too blind to see the twist at the end of the movie. In the end it really took my by surprised and gave me all the more reason to love this movie. This may not be a very good movie, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. #7. Moon

2009 was a year for sci-fi lovers with movies like Star Trek, Avatar and District 9. Another sci-fi gem to come out of 2009 was Moon. This is a one man show and is carried on the shoulders of Sam Rockwell and his incredible performance. I really believe he deserves an Oscar nomination. Seriously, check this film out.

 

#6. Adventureland

Adventureland is really sweet and funny in parts. But the best thing about the movie is how it hit home with me and how it has the ability to connect with you on so many different levels. Unfortunately, Kristen Stewart’s performance was no where up to par with the rest of the cast, especially Jesse Eisenberg’s and Martin Starr’s. But that doesn’t take much away from an excellent movie.

 

#5. District 9

What Neill Blomkamp did with District 9 blew minds, mine included. The visual and sound effects in the movie were just incredible considering the budget for the film. Not only do the visuals hit you really hard but the story is so compelling it drags you in emotionally and you start to really feel for the main character Wikus van der Merwe along with the Prawns. #4. The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker was, without a doubt, the most intense and riveting film I saw in 2009. Everything, right down to the nerves and danger, felt so real. Ultimately, in a war movie, that’s what you want. And The Hurt Locker definitely delivers in that regard. Also, great performance by Jeremy Renner. Check out my short review of the movie here.

 

#3. Watchmen

I’m not a comic book fan so I had never heard of Watchmen before the movie. So I had no expectations coming into the movie. I absolutely adored the movie and am glad I watched the movie without having read the graphic novel. If I had read the novel first, I would not have enjoyed and appreciated the movie for how good it was. I was also glad the movie was rated R because it would not have worked any other way. All in all, Watchmen had an awesome gritty and compelling look to it. I got so much satisfaction from watching it. Check out my review of the movie here.

 

#2. Zombieland

Producing so many laughs and also delivering satisfying zombie gore and violence makes Zombieland one hell of a zombie movie. That aside, the performances from Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin and Woody Harrelson only made this movie better. The cameo by Bill Murray was amazing. 2009 could have very well been Jesse Eisenberg’s break out year with his success with the two ‘land’ movies and landing the role of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network. At the end of the day, Zombieland proved to be the most enjoyable and entertaining movie of 2009.

 

#1. Inglourious Basterds

I simply adored Inglourious Basterds. Everything about it was right. The opening sequence to the movie is just about the best opening to any movie out there. And I loved how the film had few action scenes but had plenty of controlled, intense one-on-one conversations scenes. Brad Pitt did an excellent job, as usual, but not as excellent as Christoph Waltz who made such a believable and epic villain in the film. This film, I think, is Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece and will last for a long time.

 

Special Mentions

The following are a few movies I liked but could not find space for in my top 10.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

The 6th installment to the franchise was arguably the best of all 6 so far and one of the best movies of 2009. Tom Felton gives a stand out performance and the plot of the 6th book really gets transformed well for the silver screen. Read my review here.

 

Drag Me To Hell

Drag Me To Hell was not only scary and terrifying but also quite good fun. The sense of humor meshed in with the terror did great for the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a fun movie. Check out my review here.

 

Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity was probably the success story of the last year, if not the decade. It was so simplistic, yet genuinely scary. A well made movie considering it was made for only $11,000.

 

Let The Right One In

OK so this movie might not have been made or released in 2009 but I saw it in 2009, so sue me. I was so impressed with this Swedish movie about 12-year old kids, one of which is a vampire. If you’re looking for brilliant child acting, Let The Right One In is the movie for you. This movie takes you on an emotional ride among other things and I implore you to get your hands on this movie before Hollywood remakes it and releases Let Me In this year.

So that’s that. I hope all of you had a great 2009 and here’s to hoping 2010 will be even better, both in the movie world and otherwise.

I know I haven't been posting anything of late but in my defense, I've been terribly busy with work and college. Actually no, I've just been lazy. But that aside, here is a hilarious video I saw on /Film which features bloopers from this summer's Star Trek. The video will be included in the Blu-Ray version of the movie. Movie News Roundup- May 18, 2009

As I scour the Internet and Hollywood movie blogs, I come across tons of stories all the time. So I thought I would bring you a few quick news bits from movieland:

Angels & Demons raked in $48 million at the US box office in it’s first weekend. That’s down from the $77 million The Da Vinci Code grossed three years ago. However, Angels & Demons did significantly better on a worldwide scale, earning $104 million from 96 other countries. Read my review on Angels & Demons here.

Word-of-mouth overcame geekdom as Star Trek’s gross for it’s 2nd weekend fell by only 43% from last week, earning $43million taking its total tally to $148 million, domestically. Read my review on Star Trek here.

Chris Hemsworth (George Kirk- James Kirk’s dad in Star Trek) has been cast as Marvel’s Thor.

Jon Favreau likes Star Trek, briefly reviewing it on Twitter: “Just saw Trek. JJ did a great job. I recommend it highly.”

A video has been released featuring snippets of movies showing at the Cannes Film Festival. Towards the end, there is 16 seconds of video in which we get the first look at Heath Ledger in his last movie before his death, (yes, The Dark Knight was not his last movie) The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto On SNL

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto appeared on this week’s Saturday Night Live, responding to the criticism and harsh feedback their new film, Star Trek, has been getting from hardcore fans. Chris Pine was just as funny as he was in the film, maybe even more. I really like him. He could be the next big thing in Hollywood. Zach Quinto, for me, isn’t cut out for comedy. But for roles that include slicing open people’s brains and being an emotionless alien, he’s perfect. See their skit below.

Opening This Week: Observe and Report Star Trek Sell Out!

Tons of movies hitting the cinemas in Malaysia this week but I'll be previewing only three, one of which is a local production. Malaysia Boleh. So the following are films that are set for release later this week, in order of language/origin of the film.

Basically the dark, mature version of Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Same premise but very different substance. Observe and Report is about a mall security guard by the name of Ronnie Barnhardt who takes on the local law enforcement.

From what I've heard, Observe and Report is a very dark and unorthodox comedy. If you get the kind of crude humor in the film, you'll love it. If not, you'll despise it. I've even heard watching this film may be awkward and uncomfortable for some because of its vulgarity. I doubt this film is suited for Malaysian audiences. Plus, so many scenes would be cut out. Just to give you a sense of how vulgar this is, below is the red band trailer.

They both work for FONY, a multinational conglomerate whose mission statement, copied from a Taiwanese company, is to be original. In the face of such pressure, Eric and Rafflesia is questioned whether they will retain their artistic integrity or will they finally sell out to fame, fortune or some other nasty thing that also starts with "F". Star Trek blew my non-Trekkie mind. It was so good. Just a brief summary of my thoughts: The SFX were impeccable. Characters were so captivating and funny, adding a zest to the movie absent from previous Star Trek experiences I've had. The plot was so straightforward and so comprehensible, anybody could actually watch this film and love it. JJ Abrams really made Star Trek for the general public. To read a full review, click here. Live Long and Prosper: Star Trek Review

Going into the theater for The Dark Knight last year, probably shared the same expectations with many other people- the expectations of a comic book movie. But coming out of the movie, all I could bring myself to thinking was that it was just a hell of a movie. Not hell of a comic book movie, but hell of a movie period. It definitely revolutionized the modern comic book genre and managed to cater to regular non-fanboy audiences. For me, Star Trek did the same thing. I have never seen any of the previous 10 Star Trek movies and only seen a couple episodes of the TV series. And yet, I absolutely loved Star Trek. From beginning to end. Just like last year’s Batman movie, this film was just a damn good movie.

The film sucks you right in from the word go, starting off with a full-out battle between a Federation ship and a Romulan ship. Right off the bat your eyes are allowed to indulge in such realistic special effects it makes you want to actually dodge the beams being fired from the ships. OK maybe not that realistic, but still it was really good SFX. Not only were there great visuals but also an incredibly high degree of suspense along with tons of emotion inducing scenes. And remember, this was all in the first scene of the movie.

This is actually a really difficult review to write because there was literally not much wrong with the movie. It was outstanding in every aspect. The action was non-stop. There were unexpected humor thrown in here and there, especially when Scotty came into the fray. And the way JJ Abrams laid out the plot was superbly done. So seamlessly did he manage to create a story that stayed true to being distinctly Star Trek, yet seem like your run of the mill, everyday great movie. I think I’ve said this earlier on but that’s the best thing about the movie; how us normal people, as oppose to Trekkies and Trekkers for that matter, could actually comprehend what was going on and enjoy this film of a heavy genre. I guess some of that boils down to the fact that this is a reboot film but it takes nothing away from the wonderful job JJ Abrams has done with the film.

When you first saw that Zachary Quinto (Sylar in Heroes) was playing the role of the legendary Spock, what did you think? What I thought was that this is going to be so weird. I have ever only known him as Sylar but now he’s Spock. I think in this film, Quinto really showed his acting prowess. I really had no thoughts of Sylar in my head any time he came up on screen. He was the most convincing cast member in the entire film. I truly believed he was a pointy-eared, emotionless, green-blooded hobgoblin. Watch the film and you’ll understand that last bit. But my point was that Quinto gave an excellent performance outshining the rest. Matt Damon recently came out and said he declined the role of Jim Kirk and thank god he did. Chris Pine was witty, funny, sarcastic in the right way; he had everything that was demanded for playing the role of Jim Kirk. The rest of the main cast, I was very satisfied with, maybe except for Uhura. It felt like she wasn’t as involved in things as the other members of the cast. I loved that there was plenty of humor coming from Scotty (Simon Pegg) and Pavel Chekov (Anton Yelchin), whereas John Cho from Harold and Kumar had just one humorous scene as Hikaru Sulu. As for Leonard Nimoy, well he was just old-looking, but interesting nonetheless. Eric Bana did the evil, revenge-seeking villain thing really well as Nero, captain of of the Romulan ship.

One thing I’m starting to like more and more now is the shakycam technique. The cinematography for this film was so good it only aided the FX. Its amazing how having shaky shots adds so much more to the dramatics of a scene. Made you feel right in the middle of all the action. Which was great in a Sci-Fi film like this. Something else that made so much more difference to the experience of the film was the score, composed by JJ Abrams’ regular, Michael Giacchino. Really gave an outer space/Sci-Fi kind of feel to it, if there even is such a thing.

I’m not going to tell you to watch this if you’re into Sci-Fi. I’m not going to tell you to watch this with your friends or family. I’m just going to say watch this film, no matter who you are or what kind of movie you’re into. Forget the genre, forget the title of the movie. Just keep it in mind that this might just be the best film of the year so far. I’m not too sure because I still hold Watchmen in very high regard but Star Trek is definitely up there with it. When you do eventually see this movie and if you like it, just know that a sequel has already been announced and is probably set for release in 2011.

If I offended any Trekkies (and I know I’ve already offended Trekkers by saying Trekkies) reading this, I apologize for my lack of Star Trek knowledge. You really can’t blame me, there is a lot to know about in the world of Star Trek.

Wolverine vs. Harry Potter vs. James Tiberius Kirk

If Wolverine, Harry Potter and James T. Kirk were to face off in battle, who would win? Wolverine has his indestructible skeleton, healing ability and of course the retractable claws. Harry would have his magic and the fact that he's "The Chosen One". And James Kirk simply has ray guns and the super-massive USS Enterprise. Taking all of those into account along with anything that would aid them in battle, who would win? I wanna know what you think. So let me know in the comments.

A couple of days ago I said that there was another trailer about to be released. Well I finally have it. And 2 more. Looks like studios are releasing lots of trailers lately, gearing up for the summer blockbuster season which officially starts on May 1 with the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

2009 Must-See IMAX Movies

Sorry to interrupt the ongoing '2009 Must-See Movies'. I still have Part 4 pending. Last part. Hopefully will be posted tomorrow. Latest by the weekend. Been quite busy today so real short post. Another 2009 Must-See list. Keeping up the spirit of that. So I hope you enjoy this list if it doesn't excite you first.

If you didn't know before, Warner are re-releasing the dark favorite of last year, The Dark Knight. If you caught it in regular cinemas last time and didn't get the IMAX experience of The Caped Crusader, seriously consider doing that this time round. Re-release happening on the 23rd of this month. Hope it reaches Malaysia on that day too. Not sure. Will keep you guys posted. Enough talk already. Here's the list in no particular order.
