Kick-Ass Character Posters

I don’t feel like writing today so I’m just gonna post up some cool posters from the upcoming superhero/comedy film, Kick-Ass, based on the graphic novel. Enjoy!

Kick-Ass gets an April 16 release here but I won’t be surprised if it gets pulled from distribution here in Malaysia. It is, after all, an R-rated movie. Even if it does get shown here, I doubt it would be worth ten bucks to go see in the theaters.

Opening This Week: G-Force Tsunami

It is fall season now and there will be some great movies coming out in the months to come, especially in the form of Oscar-worthy films. But do not expect a blockbuster every week. This week we have an espionage movie from Hollywood starring talking mice, or are they guinea pigs? Either way, a movie about talking rodents spies. Yeah. Also, we have a Korean movie about a Tsunami.

See what people on Twitter are saying about G-Force

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer brings his first 3-D film to the big screen with G-Force, a comedy adventure about the latest evolution of a covert government program to train animals to work in espionage. Armed with the latest high-tech spy equipment, these highly trained guinea pigs discover that the fate of the world is in their paws. Tapped for the G-Force are guinea pigs Darwin (Sam Rockwell), the squad leader determined to succeed at all costs; Blaster (Tracy Morgan), an outrageous weapons expert with tons of attitude and a love for all things extreme; and Juarez (Penelope Cruz), a sexy martial arts pro; plus the literal fly-on-the-wall reconnaissance expert, Mooch and a star-nosed mole, Speckles (Nicolas Cage), the computer and information specialist.

If a movie has talking 3-D animated guinea pigs in and it's not made by Pixar, you have nothing to get excited about. In fact, there's only one reason why I would consider watching this film. And that would be Jerry Bruckheimer. But I'm sure a ton of people are going to love this film. So don't listen to me when I say don't go and see this film.

See what people on Twitter are saying about Tsunami At Haeundae

A popular vacation spot on the East Sea coast, Haeundae draws one million visitors to its beaches every year. One day, a geologist who is an expert on tsunami research, discovers the East Sea showing signs of activity similar to the Indian Ocean at the time of the 2004 Tsunami. Despite his warnings, the Disaster Prevention Agency affirms that Korea is in no harm of being hit but on a hot summer day, a super-tsunami is headed straight for Haeundae at 500 miles per hour.

It should be interesting to see how a foreign disaster movie without the financial prowess of Hollywood gets along with it's special effects and everything else.

Car Stunt Goes Wrong In NY

A car chase scene went terribly wrong Monday morning when a black Ferrari lost control and jumped the curb to smash into a Sbarro's in Times Square, New York. Two injuries were reported when a woman was knocked over and a street light fell on another bystander. Both were taken to Bellevue Hospital and are said to have only minor injuries. The stunt driver who was driving the Ferrari escaped unharmed.

The scene was being shot on a street closed off to public for the filming of Nicolas Cage's new movie, The Sorcerer's Apprentice which is a live-action adaptation of the Disney classic Fantasia.

The Ferrari was in pursuit of a Mercedes
swerved in and out of traffic before before losing control and hitting the sidewalk.

The incident was caught on tape and was submitted to the New York Post. I've embedded the video below.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is slated for release July 16, 2010.

[Review] Knowing

[This review may contain spoilers]

knowing2009 is turning out to be a good year for movies for me. In my opinion, one of the best movie experiences you can have is when you are misled by all the promotional hoo-haa like posters and trailers, then be completely surprised by what the movie is really all about. I just had this experience watching Alex Proyas’ latest film, Knowing.

The plot is simple enough. John Koestler (Nicolas Cage) is a Professor at MIT whose son is a student at an elementary school that buried a time capsule 50 years earlier. When John get a hold of a piece of paper with a bunch of numbers on it from the time capsule, he discovers the numbers are predictions of when, how many people were killed and where every major disaster has happened since 1959, except for three. He then is determined to make sense of these predictions, try to prevent and dig up the mystery and history behind these predictions, only to uncover unworldly circumstances.

During and immediately after watching this, my mind was blown. I really do regard watching the film as one of the best movie experiences I’ve had. And I’ll tell you why. I went into the movie expecting a typical disaster-type film ala The Day After Tomorrow. The film managed to keep me pretty much in the dark up until 10 minutes before the end. I was completely blown away at the fact that I was watching a Science-fiction film the entire time and I didn’t know it. Call me clue-less or whatever, but it truly gave me incredible viewing pleasure. I walked out of the cinema feeling invigorated in respect to my interest in the Sci-fi genre. I honestly think this was a kick-ass Sci-fi film. Best in years.

The film started out pretty slow, bordering on dull, giving the audience a chance to be introduced to the characters, their relationships as well as the basic plot to the story. For the first quarter or so of the film, it felt like it was stuck in 2nd gear but instantaneously jumped straight to 5th gear with the plane crash scene as seen in the trailer. Knowing has the perfect mix of reaching out to the audience through the personal and sentimental father-son relationship as well as the high octane disaster scenes. Being completely cliche, I felt like I was actually there when the plane crashed and the subway disaster happened. The effects were that good.

Other than having sensational effects, the story was so brilliantly put together it maintained a sense of horror and fright in a movie that was far from scary. Looking deeper into the themes of the movie, it talks about determinism and randomness, referring to the Universe as the former. Making discrete references to fate, Science versus religion, God and heaven; Knowing presents us with fascinating thoughts.

The ending is anything but predictable and typical. It took Proyas a lot of guts to end the film the way he did and I loved it the way it was. It is so rare to see an ending that is so determined and ambitious.

To find out what I’m talking about, just go see the film. I’m not saying you’ll like the film because this film is far from being a film for everyone. Fans of the disaster and Sci-fi genres, I urge you to see the film. Special effects junkies, you too. To sum up the film, I thought it was mind-blowingly good, blowing my mind in more ways than one. I really loved it. So far, almost on par with Watchmen for my movie of the year. But then again, we’re still in March.

Special mention – 10/10 for SFX

The End of the World Again?

Being a big fan of disaster movies and a relative one of Nicolas Cage, I'm excited for this one, Knowing. Having said that, there's a high probability the fiml could be crap. We'll find out 20 March of next year.

As always, a trailer.
